I have a confession. I never had tuna salad until about two months ago…Have I been living under a rock? Not quite — I blame it on my childhood picky eating tendencies, paired with having pet cats that regularly ate tuna. Not exactly the recipe for success, huh?

Since my childhood years, my taste buds have changed and I also no longer live with a cat, so I thought it might be time to give tuna a real fighting chance. With being a dietitian and knowing the health benefits that tuna can provide (like omega-3s and lean protein), I kinda felt like a fool for abstaining from something that was such a nutritional powerhouse.

Now I know, sometimes tuna gets a bad rap for it’s high mercury content, but the simple trick to combat this seemingly unfortunate pitfall is to buy high quality and sustainable tuna.

But Clara, how do you know what brand to buy?? Is there really a difference? How do you know it’s sustainable?

I KNOW. It’s a crazy and confusing world out there with all of the marketing and labeling schemes today. Most of us weren’t taught label reading 101 in high school, so we’re often left in the dark with knowing what to look for. However, that’s where I like to put my expert grocery browsing and buying (and college degree ;)) to work for you! I recommend to anyone wanting to become more adept at grocery shopping and label reading to carve out some time to exclusively spend browsing grocery aisles, reading labels, and identifying products that are smart, sustainable and healthy choices. And if you just don’t have the time or energy to do so, or you’re flat out unsure where to begin, I’m always happy to offer my help!

As for tuna, I prefer Safe Catch Foods. Why? Their products contain the lowest mercury content on the market, and they individually test every single little tuna fish that comes through their facility. If it’s overdosed on mercury, it isn’t used. Talk about meticulous — which is how it should be. I also love Wild Planet Foods tuna for another great sustainable option.

So, here we are. I’m sharing a tuna salad recipe on my blog. I guess you could say it’s now become a staple lean protein and source of omega-3s in my usual meal rotation. Aside from using it to make tuna salad, I’ve also subbed it in my salmon burger recipe to make tuna burgers! Not totally sold on tuna yet? I may be biased, but I firmly believe that tuna burgers and the following recipe are two “gateway” recipes to enjoying tuna without feeling like you are licking your cat’s bowl. Appetizing…. On to the recipe, shall we?
